1997: Ellen DeGeneres comes out in "The Puppy Episode" of her eponymous sitcom.

On This Day In LGBTQ+ History:

1921: Marcel Proust publishes the first volume of Sodome et Gomorrhe. 

1965: Two LGBT sit-ins and five days of Janus Society leafletting against denials of service to LGBT people at Dewey’s restaurant in Philadelphia (10 participants, 4 arrests).

1969: Los Angeles Committee for Homosexual Freedom solidarity picketing at States Steamship Lines.

1971: LGBT participation in antiwar demonstrations in DC (500 participants)

1973: GAA-NY demonstration at City Hall to protest inaction on gay rights bill (30 participants; 10 arrests)

1973: Newsweb Enterprises refused to print Issue 8 of the Toronto gay paper The Body Politic over "obscene" ads. 

1980: Publication of "Young, Gay and Proud" by Sasha Alyson and Beth Ireland. 

1980: Two Winnipeg chain bookstores remove copies of Joy of Gay Sex and Joy of Lesbian Sex from shelves following threats from police of obscenity charges.

1983: Gay Men's Health Crisis fundraiser at Madison Square Garden draws 18,000 people. 

1988: Some 30,000 demonstrators march in London to protest the passage of Section 28. This is the largest lesbian and gay rally in the history of the UK. 

1989: In Austin, Texas, more than 20,000 people march on the state capital in the largest gay and lesbian rights demonstration in the state’s history.

1990:  Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center reports that the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibit is drawing approximately twenty-five hundred visitors a day.

1997: Ellen DeGeneres comes out in "The Puppy Episode" of her eponymous sitcom.

2001: The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approves a measure allowing city employees to claim reimbursement for up to $50,000 of costs associated with gender affirming care. 

2007: Regulations outlawing discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, covering the provision of goods, facilities and services, enter into force in Great Britain.
